Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
