That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid secret police. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a method to instruct the aggressor; his crime policy states that when someone steals your jacket you should give them your pullover as well.
The evident and clear fact that the Savior from scripture requests a kind of profound affection focused on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion rather a scandalous religion: attractive to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality demanding to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
