Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
