Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
