No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
