Cyclone Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon category five storm as it veers in the direction of the Caribbean island, causing dangerous flash flooding and rock falls.

The hurricane, which had winds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean and is anticipated to make landfall by Tuesday, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Warnings of electricity outages and disruption to utilities have been released as Melissa generates up to 30 inches of rain and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been told.

Melissa is the 13th named hurricane in this year's Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in the eleventh month.

Advisories are also active for parts of the neighboring country such as the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where Melissa is projected to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Mudslides presently generated by the storm have already killed two in Haiti, according to local authorities.

The hurricane is forecast to move across the island nation by midweek before moving through the Greater Antilles and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.
